SUMMARY:Getting the Facts About Organ Donation After Death: Church Teachings and Medical Realities
DESCRIPTION:Countless lives have been saved through vital organ transplantation. The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes organ donation after death as a “noble and meritorious act” (2296). At the same time\, it highlights the dead donor rule and the need for explicit consent. There are concerns about proper informed consent when a person signs up at the Department of Motor Vehicles\, has never discussed it with a medical professional\, and is unaware of how it actually works. For example\, people considering organ donation may not understand what “brain death” is\, how it is determined in practice\, and how this relates to Church teaching on vital organ donation. Moving forward\, patients considering organ donation after death should understand the latest medical facts and relevant moral principles in order to make well-informed decisions. \nBio: Dr. John Di Camillo manages NCBC’s 24/7 free ethics consultation service and the Personal Consultations Fellows and Interns Program. He applies Catholic moral theology to science and medicine through research\, writing\, speaking\, mentoring\, and fielding hundreds of ethics questions every year. His areas of focus include cooperation with evil\, sexual orientation and gender identity\, brain death and organ donation\, reproductive technologies\, and pregnancy complications. He has teaching experience across multiple disciplines\, including Italian\, Church history\, science\, philosophy\, biomedical ethics\, and moral theology.

SUMMARY:And The Two Shall Become One Flesh: The Inseparable Meanings of Conjugal Love
DESCRIPTION:Father Strand will provide an historical overview of 20th century developments in the Church’s articulation of the meaning of conjugal love. He will argue that Pope Saint Paul VI’s contribution to this discussion in Humanae Vitae not only synthesized Church teaching on contraception but also would become the basis for the Church’s response to IVF. He will encourage health care professionals to remember they cannot be good physicians without first being good metaphysicians. \nBio: Father Strand is the pastor of St. Frances Cabrini Parish and St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Parish in West Bend. He studied at the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family Studies in Rome\, focusing his research on classical education. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Video preparation by: Ben Siemens

SUMMARY:St. Benignus and the Senchus Mór: The Supreme Court Tackles Gender Dysphoria
DESCRIPTION:This coming term\, the Supreme Court of the United States will consider the constitutionality of Tennessee SB1\, a law banning hormonal and surgical interventions for gender dysphoria. We will discuss the potential impact of the case\, United States v. Skrmetti\, on both the medical profession and the U.S. legal system as a whole\, drawing light from the work of St. Benignus\, whose feast we celebrate on November 9. St. Benignus\, known as “St. Patrick’s psalm-singer\,” was instrumental in helping St. Patrick compile the Irish code of laws (the Senchus Mór) in the 5th century. \nSignup Below

SUMMARY:Witnessing to Life\, Truth and Love in a Fallen World: The Paradox of the Gospel
DESCRIPTION:A light supper follows Mass and talk by: \nFr. John Gibson\, Priest of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and Pastor of St. Jerome Parish: \nWitnessing to Life\, Truth and Love in a Fallen World: The Paradox of the Gospel \n“For when I am weak\, then I am strong”. What does St. Paul’s bold and startling claim have to do with the Christian life in general and the medical profession in particular? Why does St. Paul say that “We preach Christ crucified” with the confidence that he will win souls for God’s Kingdom with such a message? \nWhat is “failure” in health care and in life overall? As patients or healthcare workers\, can’t we expect advancements in technology and medicine to finally and entirely alleviate suffering? On the other hand\, why are injury\, illness\, and the infirmity of old age occasions for grace\, peace\, and even joy? Fr. Gibson will explore one of the great paradoxes of the Gospel – how weakness can be a blessing since it was the very path chosen by the God-man. \nThe White Mass is the traditional name given for the Mass for medical professionals\, drawn from the white coats that physicians wear. St. Luke\, an educated Greek physician\, author of the Gospel of Luke and a companion of the Apostle Paul\, serves as the patron saint of the medical profession. \nSignup below:

SUMMARY:WHY SHOULD IT MATTER – WHEN MEDICINE BECOMES AGENDA-DRIVEN?
DESCRIPTION:Even though well-intentioned\, advocacy for alternative priorities and goals in the practice of medicine – beyond simply the benefit to the individual patient – has led to an unfortunate loss of trust in the medical profession. \nThis presentation explores the grounding philosophy of medicine and what its premise holds for patients and practitioners who stay true to its principles. Unlike “pure” sciences\, medicine is also an “art” with an interpersonal\, subjective element. Dr. Fernandes will illustrate the dangers of an “agenda-driven” medicine\, with examples from past and present that threaten patient care. Finally\, he will show that authentic Catholic healthcare\, grounding the art and science of medicine in both truth (through reason and experience) and charity can help right the course philosophically and practically – and will provide tips for physicians and other healthcare professionals on what they can do to advocate for authentic\, dignity-based medicine. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nDr. Fernandes is a Professor of Pediatrics at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Associate Director of the Center for Bioethics at Ohio State University. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Pediatricians and an elected member of the AAP’s Executive Committee on Bioethics. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Video preparation by: Ben Siemens

SUMMARY:SCIENTIFIC and ETHICAL CONCERNS with the MEDICAL MANAGEMENT of GENDER DYSPHORIA
DESCRIPTION:With the rapid rise in the reported prevalence of sex-discordant gender identity\, there has been increasing demand for health professionals to provide medical interventions directed toward aligning the appearance of the body to an individual’s desired sex.  Dr. Hruz will critically assess the existing scientific evidence used to advocate for affirming one’s preferred gender\, halting normally timed puberty\, administering cross-sex hormones\, and surgically altering primary and secondary sexual traits.  The relative risks and benefits of gender-affirming medical interventions will then be discussed\, weighing both short- and long-term physical and psychological outcomes.  Finally\, a framework for designing and implementing clinical studies to address the most significant knowledge gaps will be proposed. \nSaturday\, April 29\, 20238:00 am: Mass followed by coffee/pastry9:00 am – 10:30 am: Presentation/Q&A \nSt. Mary’s Visitation Parish1260 Church StreetElm Grove\, WI. 53122 \nRegistration is required.

SUMMARY:End of Life: Caring for the Human Person While Preparing the Soul
DESCRIPTION:Mass at 6:00 pm\, followed by a presentation by Dr. Sister Edith Mary Hart\, RSM\, DO: End of Life: Caring for the Human Person While Preparing the SoulDownload the PDF flyer to print: Here \nAs faithful Catholics\, we know that death will come to each of us and to those we love sooner or later.  In a world that often sees little meaning in suffering and death – as something to “get through” – we are often conflicted about questions and situations that occur at the end of life. The focus seems mainly on end-of-life documents\, ensuring wishes are communicated about care to receive. Though important\, how well does this help us face suffering and death as Christians? \nCertainly\, we want to relieve pain and discomfort to the best of our ability and cure or remedy illness that is in our power to do so. Death\, however\, awaits us all\, and naturally some suffering and diminishment over time.  How can we help ourselves and those we care for prepare for death and what duties should be considered in preparation? SUMMARY:Healing the Psychologic Trauma of Today’s Elite College Students
DESCRIPTION:Why is anxiety and depression increasing among college students-especially among those at higher-ranked institutions? What is making young people with the greatest talents and best opportunities so anxious? Fr. Eric Nielsen will attempt to address these questions based on his 15 years of experience ministering to the University of Wisconsin-Madison college students. \nMass 9:00 am followed by a presentation by Fr. Eric Nielsen\, St. Paul’s Student Center\, Madison: Healing the Psychologic Trauma of Today’s Elite College Students \n\nOur first 2022 Milwaukee Guild event\, on April 30\, was well attended\, with approximately 180 attendees. \nFr. Eric shared his pastoral experience working with college students at the University of Wisconsin\, Madison as pastor at St. Paul Catholic Student Center (https://uwcatholic.org) \nHis discussion centered on the marked increase of anxiety and depression amongst these gifted students\, who have every reason to expect a bright future. He emphasized the importance of human relationships as the path to happiness and fulfillment. He also discussed the differences in causes of anxiety and depression between female and male students. Attendees noted many takeaway messages in his experiences and observations including the importance of a prayer life as well as a plan of life. There were many inspiring anecdotes that demonstrate the positive impact on students who become involved at the beautiful new St. Paul’s Center. Dr. DasGupta who moderated the session encouraged everyone to pay a visit to St. Paul Center and attend a Mass to understand the difference it is making. \nHis message was interesting\, well-received\, and enjoyable! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Healing the Psychological Trauma of Today's Elite College Students\n by Fr.
