SUMMARY:WHY SHOULD IT MATTER – WHEN MEDICINE BECOMES AGENDA-DRIVEN?
DESCRIPTION:Even though well-intentioned\, advocacy for alternative priorities and goals in the practice of medicine – beyond simply the benefit to the individual patient – has led to an unfortunate loss of trust in the medical profession. \nThis presentation explores the grounding philosophy of medicine and what its premise holds for patients and practitioners who stay true to its principles. Unlike “pure” sciences\, medicine is also an “art” with an interpersonal\, subjective element. Dr. Fernandes will illustrate the dangers of an “agenda-driven” medicine\, with examples from past and present that threaten patient care. Finally\, he will show that authentic Catholic healthcare\, grounding the art and science of medicine in both truth (through reason and experience) and charity can help right the course philosophically and practically – and will provide tips for physicians and other healthcare professionals on what they can do to advocate for authentic\, dignity-based medicine. \n\n\n\n\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n\n\n\nDr. Fernandes is a Professor of Pediatrics at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Associate Director of the Center for Bioethics at Ohio State University.
